Pro: Life: Why It’s Important and How to Share With Your Children
Every year, thousands of people across the country will join the March for Life rally to take action and fight for the rights of the unborn. Because I support the conviction that life in the womb is worthy of protection, I am moved to share my heart with you.
At VCS, our foundational mission is to provide an exceptional, Christ-centered education. With that overarching mission in mind, it is our responsibility to educate our children on what it means to be pro-life and why it matters. This isn’t just a political stance. And it’s more than just a religious view. My hope is to create meaningful conversation amongst our staff, parents, and students on what it means to embrace a biblical worldview, and why the support of pro-life is a critical expression of a Christ-centered perspective.
Here are a few ideas of what to share with your child(ren) today:
Share the history behind Roe vs Wade
Roe vs Wade was a decision made in the Supreme Court in 1973 that any woman, for any reason she chooses, can abort her baby. The March for Life rally happens every year around the anniversary of this court decision. Roe vs Wade was filed by Norma McCorvey, a pregnant woman who wanted an abortion. She went by “Jane Roe” to remain anonymous. McCorvey sued Henry Wade, a Dallas County district attorney, but the case then went on to the Supreme court and was ruled in her favor. Surprisingly, what most people don’t know is that Norma McCorvey gave birth to the child she was pregnant with and chose adoption. In 1997, McCorvey became a born-again Christian and traveled the country to speak out against abortion – and we praise God for his ability to redeem any situation, no matter how difficult.
Though each parent will want to share in a way that is developmentally appropriate for your child(ren), it is important for our children to know this historical milestone because it serves as the greatest human rights violation of our time.
Share what the Bible says about life:
Scripture is filled with points about God’s unfailing love for us. These verses remind us that every person is uniquely formed by God. He loves each and every one of us, and it is our duty to defend those who cannot speak for themselves. Here are a few verses to remind us and our children that we are God’s masterpiece:
Psalm 139: 13-16 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
God knows us more than anyone in our family. And he loves us, despite our failings.
Jeremiah 1:4-5 “The word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
God created each of us with a purpose, and everyone is valuable to him. Those born and not yet born.
Psalm 82:3 “Defend the lowly and fatherless; render justice to the afflicted and needy.” The Bible calls us to help those who cannot help themselves.
It is our duty as Christians to protect the lives of the unborn.
Isaiah 64:7 “Yet Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay and You our Potter: we are all the work of Your hand.”
We are all made from the same mold, and every person is shaped into a beautiful piece of art.
Share the Science with them:
Our families at VCS can feel secure in the knowledge that we provide a strong Christian education where academics and faith go hand-in-hand. Education does not need to be separate from our faith but rather joined together to help our children grow and understand a Biblical worldview. Being pro-life is not in opposition to science. In fact, medical advancements continue to affirm that life begins at fertilization when a human embryo is created. Our uniqueness is formed on day one when DNA is present.
My hope and prayer is that we can all take the time today to share with our children what the March of Life is, what God says in the Bible about life, and the science behind it.
