Pro: Life:  Why It’s Important and How to Share With Your Children

In today’s society, the March for Life rally continues to be a powerful event where thousands of individuals come together to advocate for the rights of the unborn. As an organization committed to providing a Christ-centered education, and equipping students with a Biblical Worldview, it is our duty at VCS to educate our students about the significance of being pro-life. This goes beyond political beliefs or religious perspectives; it is an essential expression of embracing a biblical worldview.

My hope is to create meaningful conversation amongst our staff, parents, and students on what it means to embrace a biblical worldview, and why the support of pro-life is a critical expression of a Christ-centered perspective. So, how can you discuss this topic with your child? Here are a few ideas:

1. Share the history of this important issue in our country

It is important for children to understand the historical context of the Supreme Court decision in 1973 known as Roe vs. Wade. This landmark ruling granted women the right to have an abortion for any reason. They should also know that Norma McCorvey, who filed the case under the pseudonym “Jane Roe,” later gave birth to the child and opted for adoption. Years later, she became a born-again Christian and actively spoke out against abortion. This story highlights the transformative power of God and reminds us of the gravity of this important issue.

The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States was as significant as it was controversial. We recognize as believers that while the overturning of this landmark legislation in our country presents an opportunity to restore legal protection for the unborn and affirm the God-endowed dignity and worth of every individual, it’s not the end of the story. Dialogue on the sanctity of life has now moved to a state level. Not only do we want to develop a Biblical Worldview in our students, but we want to cultivate in them intelligence and an ability to engage our culture on all important issues (this included) in a thoughtful, reasoned, and gracious manner. And as the question of the sanctity of life continues to be an issue which divides states as well as policy / lawmakers, it is incumbent upon us to continue to engage this topic from a Biblical perspective, and to bring our children along in the process.

 2. Explore what the Bible says about life:

The Bible is rich in passages that emphasize God’s love for us and His role as our Creator. Verses such as Psalm 139: 13-16 and Jeremiah 1:4-5 remind us that each individual is fearfully and wonderfully made by God, even before they are born. Psalm 82:3 calls us to defend the disadvantaged and needy, which includes the unborn. By understanding these scriptures, children can grasp the significance of protecting the lives of the unborn and valuing every individual.

3. Discuss the science behind life:

At VCS, we strive to provide a holistic education where faith and academics intertwine. And it is important to assure our families and students that being pro-life is not contradictory to scientific evidence. In fact, advancements in medicine continually affirm that life begins at fertilization when a human embryo is formed. DNA is present from day one, highlighting the unique identity given by God to each individual. By discussing this science with our children, we can equip them with a comprehensive understanding of the pro-life cause.

How can we engage further?

As parents and educators, let us take the time to engage our children in conversations about the March for Life, God’s perspective on life, and the scientific evidence supporting the pro-life stance. To gain further insight into the March for Life, you can visit their website at https://marchforlife.org/ – the upcoming “Walk for Life” for the West Coast will take place in San Francisco on January 20th, 2024. Additionally, you can learn more about our local chapter of Alpha Pregnancy Clinics in Vacaville by visiting their website at https://www.rupregnant.org/. Together, let us empower our children with a Biblical Worldview, to understand the importance of protecting all human life, at all stages, who are created in the image of God.
