Alysson (Aly) Cochenour-Smith

Elementary Extended Care Teacher

Alysson Cochenour-Smith’s journey with Vacaville Christian School has come full circle. After spending 14 years as a student from preschool through graduation with the Class of 2013, she now serves on the same campus as an Extended Care teacher, investing in the next generation of students.

Many of Alysson’s favorite memories center around the traditions and community that shaped her childhood. Grandparents Day was one of the moments she looked forward to most each year.

“My grandparents drove from Missouri every single year so they could come to Grandparents Day. I do not think they missed a single one.”

“This place is like a family and a community. Once you are here, you feel it and it stays with you for years to come.”

Country Faire was another highlight of her time as a student. The fall event brought students and families together for games, laughter, and celebration.

“My brother and I won a goldfish every single year.”

Teachers also played an important role in shaping Alysson’s experience at VCS. One who made a lasting impression was her second grade teacher, Mrs. Gustafson, who now serves as the elementary vice principal.

“I remember that year clearly because we had so much fun while learning. One of my favorite memories was making paper plate turkeys for Thanksgiving. Mine was pink and frilly and it won first place.”

After graduating from VCS in 2013, Alysson attended Humboldt State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing.

“The experiences and relationships I built at VCS ultimately led me back to the same community that helped shape my life.”

In 2020 she returned to Vacaville Christian Schools, this time as a member of the staff. Being back on campus has deepened her appreciation for the Christ-centered environment that helped shape her life.

“Being back here has helped me grow in my faith.”

Reflecting on her years as a student, Alysson believes the foundation she received at VCS prepared her well for life beyond high school.

“It was a safe haven, and then I went out into the world and experienced different things. It made me prepared and excited for that.”

Her encouragement to current students and families reflects the heart of the VCS community.

“VCS is centered around Christ. It is about having a Christ-like attitude and loving Jesus and others.”

For Alysson, the impact of Vacaville Christian Schools did not end at graduation.

“Because of VCS, I renewed my faith in Jesus.”

Through faith, community, and a full-circle journey from student to staff member, Alysson reflects the lasting impact of a VCS education.
