Choosing a School: The VCS Elementary Math Advantage
When families are choosing a school, math should be one of the areas they look at closely. Strong math instruction does not happen by accident, and it is too important to leave to a one-size-fits-all approach. Some students need more time, more support, and more repetition. Other students are ready to move faster, think deeper, and be challenged beyond the pace of the larger group. A strong elementary math program has to be able to serve both.
At Vacaville Christian School, one of the ways we do this is through our Walk to Math program. Beginning in Kindergarten and continuing through 5th grade, elementary math is scheduled at the same time each morning across grade levels. This allows students to be placed in the math class that best fits their current readiness, rather than being limited only to the pace of their homeroom class.
What Is Walk to Math?
Walk to Math means students receive math instruction at the level and pace that fits them best. Some students may need additional support to strengthen foundational skills. Some students are ready for steady grade-level instruction. Others are ready to move ahead and be stretched with greater challenge. Because math is scheduled at the same time, students can “walk” to the math group that is the best fit for where they are currently learning.
This is not random placement, and it is not based on convenience. Teachers use student data, classroom performance, assessment results, and ongoing observation to make placement decisions. Those placements are also reviewed throughout the year, which means students are not locked into one track. If a student is ready to move up, we want to make that move. If a student needs more support, we want to respond quickly and thoughtfully.
Why Parents Should Care
Parents should care because math confidence is built over time. When the pace is too fast, students can develop gaps that follow them for years. When the pace is too slow, students who are ready for more can become bored, underchallenged, or even less engaged. Walk to Math helps us meet students more personally, which is one of the major advantages of the VCS elementary experience.
We also schedule math in the morning on purpose. Students are fresh, focused, and ready to do their best thinking. That matters because foundational math skills deserve strong instructional time, not whatever energy is left at the end of the day. Combined with our use of Saxon Math, a spiraling curriculum that continually reviews and builds skills over time, Walk to Math gives students a structured and responsive approach to mathematical growth.
What Do the Results Show?
Families should look closely at what a school is actually measuring and what the results show. Public schools in California typically report CAASPP results as the percentage of students who met or exceeded California’s standard. At VCS, we use the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, which reports a National Percentile Rank. That is a more rigorous benchmark because it compares our students nationally, not simply against a state-defined proficiency level.
A National Percentile Rank of 50% represents the national average. In the most recent testing year where data is available, VCS elementary students averaged 63.8% in Math, which means our elementary math performance was well above national norms. When families compare elementary math outcomes locally, VCS stands out. Our students are not just being taught in a caring Christian environment; they are being challenged, supported, and producing strong measurable results.

Here are a few local examples families may want to review directly: Browns Valley Elementary SARC, Kairos Public School SARC, and the California SARC search page. Families can look up other schools as well, but these examples give a helpful starting point for seeing the difference between a school that meets a state standard and a school choosing to measure itself against national academic performance.
The VCS Difference
Walk to Math is a great example of what makes VCS different. It is not just a program name. It is a system built around paying attention to students, using data wisely, and making sure children are appropriately supported and challenged. It also reflects one of the things families should expect from a strong Christian school: students are known personally, guided intentionally, and taught with both excellence and care.
At VCS, we want students to build strong math foundations because those foundations matter far beyond elementary school. Math teaches accuracy, perseverance, problem-solving, logical thinking, and confidence. Those habits are part of a larger vision for Christian education, where students are not only learning content, but growing in diligence, wisdom, responsibility, and readiness for what comes next.
When families choose VCS, they are choosing more than small classes or a caring environment. They are choosing an academic program that is intentional, measurable, and designed to meet students where they are while helping them grow. Walk to Math is one of the clearest examples of that commitment, and one of the reasons VCS elementary math continues to stand out.
