High School Life Sciences Teacher
New to Vacaville Christian School this year, Amanda Thomasson joined the faculty following her family’s move to California as part of a military transfer to Travis Air Force Base. What began as a relocation quickly became an unexpected opportunity to step into the classroom.
By trade, Mrs. Thomasson is a Physician Assistant, bringing a wealth of clinical knowledge and real-world experience to her Life Sciences courses. Although she has taught in other capacities, this marks her first experience in a traditional school setting. “I took the leap,” she shares. “I am convinced I am learning as much as my students are.”
Her transition into education has been shaped by both curiosity and gratitude. Immersed in the rhythms of school life, she has developed a deep appreciation for the work of teaching and the complexity of guiding young learners. Among the most rewarding aspects of her role is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students. “My favorite part is getting to know the students and letting them get to know me,” she explains. “It is truly rewarding to build these relationships and hopefully impact the people they are growing up to be.”
“Mostly, I pray that my students will know Christ.”
Mrs. Thomasson’s medical background adds a distinctive layer to her classroom. By integrating clinical insights into her lessons, she helps students connect scientific concepts to real-world applications, creating an environment where learning feels both relevant and engaging.
Faith serves as the foundation of her perspective. “Christ sustains me each and every day,” she shares. “Remembering that it is Christ in me, that He has given this opportunity, and that He will provide all that I need to love and teach my students.” While she is deeply committed to academic growth, her ultimate hope for her students extends beyond the curriculum. “Mostly, I pray that they will know Christ, even as much as I hope they are learning the information I am teaching.”
A guiding principle that continues to shape her work is a phrase she remembers from her own Christian education: “Only one life will soon be past, only what is done for Christ will last.” This reminder reflects the purpose she sees in both teaching and mentoring students.
Outside the classroom, Mrs. Thomasson treasures time with her family, including her husband, five children, and their golden doodle. She enjoys hiking, road trips, playing games, reading when time allows, and watching the sunrise. Students quickly discover another fun fact: she was a college athlete, has traveled to thirteen countries, and bakes cookies nearly every week.
Students would likely say her teacher trademark is her well-timed sarcasm, delivered with warmth and humor.
While still early in her journey at Vacaville Christian School, Mrs. Thomasson is already cultivating a classroom where curiosity, connection, and Christ-centered purpose come together.
