Fine & Practical Arts Programs

Below you’ll find descriptions of the various programs we offer for our students. VCS offers fine art programs from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

Art
At VCS, Art is a fun and foundational part of every student’s education. Students develop their skills in drawing, painting and sculpture.  Students enjoy exploring different mediums for their projects, studying a variety of artists and their styles, engaging in critiques, and reflecting on the artistic process of their own work, learning to make aesthetic judgements and expressing their thoughts through both art and word.

Radio Broadcasting
In this class, students bring their voices to life on the school’s radio station! Through hands-on experience in voice work, audio editing, interviewing, and live show hosting, creating real broadcasts for the school’s radio station. They explore the fundamentals of voice work, audio editing, interviewing, and live show hosting while developing teamwork and communication skills. Middle and high school students work together to plan, record, and produce segments that include music, news, talk shows, and special features. By the end of the course, students gain confidence behind the microphone and a strong understanding of what it takes to run a professional-quality radio program. In addition to having the opportunity to train for their radio certification, VCS’s program is one of only 255 school-run radio stations in the country, so every student is in for a unique and incredibly developmental experience.

Cinematic Arts
The Cinematic Arts course introduces students to the fundamentals of filmmaking and digital storytelling. Students learn hands-on skills in storyboarding, camera work, lighting, sound design, and editing using Adobe Premiere Pro. Weekly projects build technical and creative abilities, preparing students to produce a polished short film as their final exam.

Through collaboration and peer review, students develop teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving while exploring how to use media to tell compelling stories. By the end of the course, students will have experience in every stage of production—planning, filming, editing, and presenting—equipping them with both technical proficiency and confidence as young creators.

Drama
Drama provides students with a well rounded understanding of acting and the fine arts. With improvisation as the foundation, students learn through the structured work of monologues, voice lessons, and other improvisation exercises which teach character analysis, strengthen memorization skills, and prepare students for performance in a variety of situations.

Photography
Digital Photography introduces students to the world of visual technological creativity. Students explore the benefits of digital camera modes while also learning how to control aperture, shutter speed, and other camera settings to achieve creative effects. A variety of projects are accomplished to create a portfolio of work, displaying a knowledge of perspective, mode flexibility, light management, light painting, and color dust, all of which highlight Adobe Photoshop editing strategies. In every project lies an essence of spiritual connection, where students extend their imagination to reflect upon God’s creation as seen through a camera lens. Students depart from this class confident in their photography skills, but more so confident in their ability to see the world through the Bible and God’s word.

Drumline
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of marching percussion, focusing on rhythm, technique, and ensemble performance. Students learn to play snare, tenor, bass drum, and cymbals while developing precision, musicality, and teamwork. Regular rehearsals and performances build confidence, showmanship, and a strong sense of school spirit.

Choir
The VCS Music Conservatory’s Choral Program is committed to developing students through Christ-centered music education and intentional community. With a strong emphasis on vocal excellence, students refine their skills through ensemble performance, sight singing, and knowledge of vocal health. The program also fosters deep understanding of music theory, choral literature, and cultural impact, while encouraging reflection on the deeper, God-given purpose of music.

Chapel Leadership
This course is designed for students who are passionate about using their musical talents to lead worship and honor God. Students learn about the roles on a worship team, develop their musical and vocal skills, and explore the deeper connection between music and their relationship with Jesus. We focus on how to lead worship effectively, reading your audience while also being sensitive to the spirit, and different worship styles.

Art
Elementary Art focuses on the development and nurturing of the natural God given artistic skills He has instilled in students. From Kindergarten through fifth grade we study and create artworks based off of various artists, important movements in Art History, and illustrations from literature. The primary aim of this weekly art class is to help students build learnable skills and to develop a life-long love of the Arts. God created us in His image, which means we also have that creative spark; we practice studio art in order to create new and unique works of art, bringing glory to Him.

Band
Sometimes called “The Explorers,” this is the junior version of the VCS Music Conservatory. Students 3rd through 5th grade perform orchestral arrangements, all based on their beginning adventure level on their chosen instrument. Concerts and live-streaming is the home of this energetic group of kids!

Vocal Music
In this class, students discover the joy of singing and making music together! Through fun songs, games, and movement activities, they learn to match pitch, keep rhythm, and develop healthy singing habits. Students explore musical expression, simple harmonies, and the basics of reading music while building confidence and teamwork. Each class celebrates creativity and worship through music, helping students use their voices to glorify God with joy and excellence.
