Fine & Practical Arts Programs

Below you’ll find descriptions of the various programs we offer for our students. VCS offers fine art programs from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

Radio Conservatory

The Radio Conservatory at Vacaville Christian Schools dedicates its mission to use contemporary and historic creative connections to awaken the aspiring artist in everyone through multi-media projects including video, radio / television broadcasting, film and Internet. This, along with live productions, defines the Radio Conservatory at Vacaville Christian Schools as one of the most dynamic and exciting creative arts institutions — with an unusual name. Read more

VCS Radio Jazz
The full orchestra has a smaller unit, The VCS Radio Jazz Ensemble — sometimes referred to as “Radio Jazz.”  This smaller ensemble plays more eclectic music and is featured in many film scores, concert halls, and on their exclusive 24-hour Sound Art central radio channel. They’ve recorded several albums at the legendary Fantasy Studios, Capitol Records in Hollywood, and Lucasfilms’ Skywalker Ranch.

VCS Radio Symphony
Recognized for its unique presentations of 19th and 20th century high art music, VCS Radio Symphony is the flagship instrumental performance ensemble at Vacaville Christian Schools. The orchestra is made up of young musicians who have met the rigorous achievement level requirements and advanced commitment necessary to study and prepare top quality music. Only professional works are tackled without simplifying the overall arrangements. Students work with world-class professional musicians, historians and entertainment industry experts to present the highest level possible in their performances. Most of all, these young aspiring musicians work hard, with some projects requiring over 117 hours of study and rehearsal. Read more

Art
Our art program allows students the opportunity to gain foundational skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Students build upon those skills as they explore different mediums, study various artistic styles, and learn strategies for making aesthetic choices. Students have the option to participate in arts festivals and shows to showcase their work.

AP Studio Art class, a college-level course, encourages students to express their own “voice” through their artwork. They engage in ideation, advanced composition and technique, and critiques, and they produce artwork for a 24-piece portfolio. During the course of this year, the student’s work evolves into mastery.

Radio Broadcasting
Under the direction of the Music Conservatory, students operate a real radio network, including talk, sports, music, drama production, and produce news broadcasts. Students gain experience in commercial and PSA production, voice acting, basic technical operations, and promotion. Productions are broadcast on VCS Radio 100.9 FM and www.vcsradio.com, as well as on actual commercial radio stations.

Broadcast News
This course covers three topics essential for students to develop the competence and confidence to work in a TV or visual electronic media newsroom.  Students write and develop visual storytelling for broadcast, develop an understanding of roles within the newsroom, understand processes and how economics, ratings, and marketing affect the flow of information. Students will also examine how legal considerations in news gathering (with special attention to libel/defamation laws and invasion of privacy affect communication). With an emphasis in videography, students will learn the basics of creating video content for websites, filming of live events such as, weddings and sporting events, as well as commercial and promotional production.

Drama (VCS Radio Players)
This program is designed to bring out the best in our students by exposing them to all aspects of the world of Drama. Beginning with Shakespearean monologues to make use of language and physical stage presence, we also make full use of the Radio Broadcasting program to develop student-written and produced radio dramas. The program then progresses to television and film production. Students participate in the entire artistic process, from writing, acting, makeup effects, and set design to camera work, lighting, special effects, and editing. As a part of the VCS Radio Conservatory, students work in a collaborative spirit with other students from many different artistic backgrounds and ambitions. This spirit runs through all of the VCS Radio Conservatory departments to create harmonious productions of a higher standard.
