Athletics, VCS, and Our Faith

Athletics, VCS, And Our Faith

As Falcons, we stand for loyalty, fearlessness, wisdom, and nobility. We proudly share this stance through our many programs, one of them being athletics. The value of athletics at VCS is significant because of its profound impact on our students and the community. Student participation in athletics creates spiritual growth, opportunities, friendships, and more.

Here Are Three Ways Athletics Brings Glory to God:

1.It Teaches Teamwork

Team play teaches our students that we need each other in order to succeed. There may be star players on a team, but no one person can win a game. Athletics reminds our students that we need each other to complete a goal successfully. And just like in sports, our faith journey requires a community of believers to encourage us when we are struggling and to celebrate our victories. Proverbs 27: 17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Our athletes learn to challenge each other every day, on and off the court.

2.It Builds Leaders

Participation in athletics gives our students the ability to become leaders in every aspect of their life. Our older athletes have the ability to mentor younger athletes, teaching and encouraging them to understand how to play effectively and learn from mistakes they have made in the past. Jesus encourages and empowers us to build leaders of the next generation in this way. We strive to coach our students to lead courageously and show God’s grace to everyone around them.

It Reminds Us That Actions Speak Louder

Proverbs 3:3-4 reminds us, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” Our Falcon athletes have the opportunity and responsibility to be characters of Christ in the way they play against competition. If we truly embody Christ, we are accountable to a higher standard—to show love and kindness through our actions. The way we play, react, and treat those around us directly impacts the way a community sees us. Our Falcon student-athletes are expected to be courageous and responsible for their fellow teammates and community. May they stand proudly on the podium before us all, bringing honor and glory to God.

Where Are We Now, and What’s In Store for the Future of Athletics at VCS?

Athletics has a strong tradition of character, excellence, and winning at VCS. In the fall of 2021, we saw every high school sport (football, cross country, and volleyball) make a postseason run, with cross country securing a NorCal section championship, and volleyball securing a spot as NorCal section championship runner up’s. We continue to send many student athletes to play in college, while many other teams are decorated playoff contenders or league champions. My vision is to see this tradition of excellence (morally, spiritually, and in terms of winning) continue and grow, with even more student athletes participating at the collegiate level.
