High School Course/Curriculum Offering

#4610P Biology

Course Fee: $25.00 supplies fee each semester

Grade level: 9-10

This course encompasses basic cell chemistry, cell structure and physiology, biotechnology, genetics, reproduction, origins of life, anatomy, taxonomy, zoology and botany. Students follow a comprehensive laboratory program, including numerous dissections.

Note for new freshman – This course is taught as a 10th grade course and the text for this course is a 10th grade text.  Students who had difficulty with 8th grade science and/or math should wait to take this course their 10th grade year or until they are better prepared.

Pre-Requisites: Students must have passed Algebra 1A and be concurrently enrolled in Algebra 1B or higher math.
Co-Requisites:

Textbooks: Biology for Christian Schools, 3rd ed. Bob Jones University Press, 2006 (lab manual inclusive)

#4700P Chemistry

Course Fee: $25.00 supplies fee each semester

Grade level: 11-12

This course teaches basic principles, theories and techniques of chemistry, stressing
concepts, applications and problem-solving skills. Labs reinforce topics and follow the scientific method. Curriculum includes scientific measurement, atomic structure, the Periodic Table, the mole concept, stoichiometry, nomenclature, chemical equations, gas laws, liquid and solid behavior, chemical bonding, molecular and ionic structure, acid/base and redox chemistry.

Pre-Requisites: Grade of C or above in General/Conceptual Physics
Co-Requisites:

Textbooks: Textbooks: Holt Visualization Chemistry. Holt Rhinehart, Winston, 2000 Supplemental: Christianity 101: Creation and Evolution 101. Harvest House Publishers, 2001

#9999 Earth Science (NEW - proposed for 2008-2009)

Course Fee: $25.00 supplies fee each semester

Grade level: 9-12

Note:  Satisfactory completion of this course fulfills the VCHS graduation requirement for a physical science, but in many cases will not satisfy a university or college admission requirement for a physical science.  It is highly recommended that students who desire to enter a UC or CSU complete the General Physics course in addition to the Earth Science course to meet admission requirements for both university systems.  However, the Earth Science course will meet UC admission requirements for a UC approved elective course.

Earth Science is a college preparatory science elective that will help the student prepare for college courses in the areas of earth and space science.  It will also demonstrate to the student the inter-relationships between the basic sciences of biology, chemistry and physics.  The student will learn analytical skills as well as how to use experimental tools to evaluate and solve problems and test hypotheses.  The course will also help the student to appreciate and understand our planet and the delicate balance in the chemical and physical states that are necessary to maintain life.

The topics covered in this course may be organized around to the following general unit headings:  Earth’s Materials, Sculpturing of Earth’s Surface, Forces Within, Historical Geology, Oceanography, Meteorology, and Astronomy.  Each of these units will have a substantial laboratory component that will emphasize investigation, experimentation, data collection and analysis, and drawing conclusions.
Prerequisites: Students must be concurrently enrolled in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1A/1B, or higher math.
