English 12 covers the periods and topics of British Literature with an emphasis on critical thinking and analysis of essays, poetry, drama, short stories, and novels. The course is designed to acquaint the students with the philosophy, history, and literature of England and to assist them in learning to critically evaluate what they read. The growth of Christian influence in British Literature will be traced as well as the decline of Christian influence and the rise of humanism. Students will also relate historical and philosophical trends to the many literary forms presented. Literary units also include Macbeth, A Tale of Two Cities, Pygmalion, and selections from The Great Divorce.

This one-year course provides an introductory study of composition and literature. Students learn and apply the writing process to compositions of varying length and purpose. They develop their grammatical skills and improve their writing technique using the skills of revision and editing.  Students analyze literature pieces applying a Christian world view.  The Odyssey, Romeo & Juliet, Great Expectations, and Lord of the Flies will be studied in greater depth.

Honors British Literature, a weighted-GPA course, covers the periods and topics of British Literature with an emphasis on critical thinking and analysis of essays, poetry, drama, short stories, and novels.  The class is open by application. The course is designed to acquaint the students with the philosophy, history, and literature of England and to assist them in learning to critically evaluate what they read. The growth of Christian influence in British Literature will be traced as well as the decline of Christian influence and the rise of humanism. Students will also relate historical and philosophical trends to the many literary forms presented.  The course will not only prepare students for college level writing and thinking but give them experience in practicing those advanced skills before their college years.  To reach that goal, honors students will be doing extensive reading and writing and be assessed using post-12th grade criteria.

This course differs from the English 11 course in the breadth and depth of writing and reading expected, and in the weighted GPA available. The class is open by application. A chronological survey of many key pieces of American Literature is designed to lead students to an understanding of American culture. Students will see how authors’ beliefs are revealed in the stories or poems they write. Students will read and analyze nonfiction, short stories, poems, novels, and plays, with a more intensive look at several novels including The Scarlet Letter, The Red Badge of Courage, The House of Mirth, The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath, Their Eyes Were Watching God,and one play, The Crucible. Systematic writing instruction and practice will include writing in the narrative, persuasive and expository domains, as well as practice with college application format essays. A multi-page research project each semester will result in a term paper to help prepare students for college writing assignments.
