Course Fee:This course differs from the English 9 course in the breadth and depth of writing and reading expected, and in the high achievement assumed of the students. The course is open by application.. Students apply the writing process to a variety of multi-paragraph compositions in this one-year course. They refine their grammatical skills and expand and improve their writing technique and style through revision and editing. In addition to this, poetry and creative writing will be utilized to further their writing skills. Students use critical thinking skills to examine the literature in light of a Christian worldview. Among the classics studied are Through Gates of Splendor, Things Fall Apart, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar, and The Screwtape Letters and additional similar books.

Course Fee:A chronological survey of many key pieces of American Literature is designed to lead students to an understanding of American culture. Students will see how authors’ beliefs are revealed in the stories or poems they write. Students will read and analyze nonfiction, short stories, poems, novels, and plays, with a more intensive look at two novels, The Scarlet Letter and The Red Badge of Courage, and one play, The Crucible. Additional student-selected books will be read and reported on. Systematic writing instruction and practice will include writing in the narrative, persuasive and expository domains. A multi-page research project each semester will result in a term paper to help prepare students for college writing assignments.
