5th Grade Overview

5th Grade is an exciting year at VCES! The curriculum includes American History studies; an introduction to pre-algebra concepts and geometry as well as continuing foundational math skills; investigating scientific concepts according to God’s Word; a full Language Arts study including spelling, essay writing and novels; plus a Biblical Choices program that encourages students to evaluate their choices based on Biblical principles and examples.

In addition to the standard curriculum, 5th grade offers many special events and projects. Writing skills are enhanced and developed with the writing of Heritage Reports, creating Memory Boxes as a biography book report, and researching the more in depth State Report. 55 Club provides opportunity for leadership and student bonding between 5th Graders and their Kindergarten buddies. The spring “Amerikids” musical performance unites our American history studies with on-stage performance, speaking and music skills. The year culminates with our annual Science Day, a hands-on investigation of scientific principles and procedures; and with our three-night Outdoor Education Retreat at Alliance Redwoods conference grounds.
