Being an exceptional musician is honoring to God as His gift of musical talent was not given frivolously, but in earnest to bring Glory to Him. It is with this understanding that students are instructed and encouraged to pursue their talents to the highest degree possible.
Secular viewpoint:
Art exists to celebrate Man's achievement in honor of Man.
Christian viewpoint:
Art exists to celebrate God's achievement in honor of God.
VCS High School Instrumental Music Studies is a rigorous part of a comprehensive course designed to teach the student the art and mastery of his chosen instrument, to develop creativity, to foster a love for the high arts, and to serve God.
HS Instrumental Music Studies is an advanced course requiring students to attend evening rehearsals, scheduled "after-school" sessions for technical training and assessment, and a range of study and performance opportunities based on the student's skill rating. A minimum rating of Level VI or higher is required for this course. Achieving level VIII in the 11th or 12th grade provides the student with honors study and is a weighted 5.0 course. Both Instrumental Music Studies and Honors Instrumental Music Studies are UC approved.
Skill Level Ratings
All Students have a skill rating based on their advancement through a list of method study books. Every method book passed off by Mr. Martin advances the student's rating. Medals are awarded to the student signifying his/her achievement. Higher ratings also advance the student's opportunities.
