4th Grade Overview

Fourth grade offers a continuation and mastery of skills presented in the primary grades as well as preparation for advanced skills presented in fifth grade and middle school. One unit of study unique to fourth grade is California state history. Students learn the history of their home state along with its varied geography, diversity, and economics. They examine California in the context of the rest of the nation. The unit culminates with a field trip to the gold country in the spring.

Language arts include Reading, English, Spelling, and Writing. The students will be exposed to a variety of areas within the field of reading including, comprehension, author studies, genres, literature appreciation, word recognition, and structural analysis through group and individual projects. The mechanics of grammar are emphasized, with applications in reports, letters, and creative writing. Students engage in American Sign Language as they practice, learn, and eventually sign some of their spelling and vocabulary words.

By the end of grade four, students describe and compare simple fractions and decimals. They identify the properties of and the relationships between plane geometric figures. They collect, represent, and analyze data to answer questions.

For science, students discover areas including life, physical, and earth sciences through hands on learning and group and individual research and participation. Course content includes insects, matter, geology, astronomy, plants, and oceanography. Our studies help them understand the world God has given for them to conserve and enjoy.
