1st Grade Overview

First Grade is a pivotal year for children. At the beginning of the year, the children are very young and dependent. By the end of the year an amazing amount of growth has taken place academically, emotionally and spiritually. They have learned how to work independently with some guidance.

Realizing that God has placed the primary responsibility of educating a child on his/her parents, we partner with them through informational weekly newsletters, phone calls, and progress reports to ensure that their child's First Grade experience is very positive.

Using both individual and cooperative learning techniques, students are given the skills necessary for successful reading, story writing, spelling, and math abilities. These skills are taught through the use of step by step phonics, thematic units, hands-on activities, manipulatives, problem solving and procedures, as well as weekly memorization.

Emphasis is placed on Christian Character and Biblical truths. This is implemented through Bible lessons, Christian character building lessons, weekly chapel attendance and Bible Verse memorization. The attitudes and truths learned from these lessons are stressed both in the classroom and on the playground.

The First Grade Teachers at VCS are dedicated to serving the Lord through service to you and your child. We look forward to partnering with you for the success of your child.
